iGEM is more or less over, but there’s no end to the science. The experience of making that quantum dot generating genetic circuit brought more questions than answers. Here are some pics taken during characterization. I still need to run it through tons more tests to know anything for certain, however.
Just submitted my first biobrick, quantum dot generator. Now time to prep mad samples for sequencing.
Holy crap, Ligatron, the god of ligation is real! And it’s freakin’ huge! http://bit.ly/ruDWm4
The RAD cells are cooking in the radiation chamber right now, which is totally radical.
mtDNA sequencing time for a friend… And more ligations to create unspeakable things. Because they are awesome.
I must be getting delirious. I just printed 40 copies of a primary research paper to give out at the Maker Faire.
I’m guessing I’m not going to get any sleep tonight either. Man preparing for Maker Faire is HARD.
F. Scott Fitzgerald and and the art of drunkenness: http://bit.ly/qOWl9g History tells us that we need to drink more.
1 day before 9/11. So far US is at its longest war in history with less than 1% of the population taking 100% of the bullets.
Talking to all the hackers makes me wish I could speak more languages.
A demonic voice proclaims “There is no kitten, only Zuul”. You flee.
All hail octocat!
100 year startship solicitation announcement from DARPA. https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity&mode=form&id=d689e7b2edb1f4141fc5979721d4567a&tab=core&_cview=0 I’m seriously tempted to submit something to the event. Certainly there isn’t any lack of ideas, though whether they are good/feasible or not nobody knows :)
To do: Make screencast for backers tonight Write bio for Manchester visit Finish phylogenetic analysis and data visualization before 10th Synthesize two new life forms with biobrick for NYC maker faire Train CS and high school kids on bb Make posters and cards Characterize quantum dot e.coli Code synbio bridge app (emacs?!?) Fly to Egypt Fly to Indiana Code and finish synbio bridge app...
“The pre-built chicken genome available from this website was missing chr25” Noooo! Not the chromosome 25!
Just ordered a copy of the Little Lisper with the amazon gift card I got a while back. Will it be as good as everybody say it is?
“Emacs/VI — the religious war that keeps on giving! 40 yeears on, and still going strong. Even better, no car bombs or killing!” - John Sundman
Writing and adding on .el scripts instead of working. I wonder if there’s a data visualization solution for emacs out there already.

A huge book chronicling the state of hackerspaces around the world circa 2008. Now this would have to be updated with bunch of synthetic biology shops around the world, hackerspaces for biology.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is the ultimate goal of synthetic biology! An animal surrounded in perpetual existential angst. “What am I? A frog or a pug?… And why do I think human thoughts…?”
Aww, look at those cute little primer bottles waiting to be diluted! Two of them will tell you whether you have an incurable and debilitating genetic condition or not.
